Offering Help and The Responses

 

1.       Definition

·         Offering help used to offer service or help to others.

·         The social function is to help interpersonal relationships between individuals with one another. By offering help to family or friends, it shows that we care about the people around us.

·         Linguistic features according to the British Council, when offering assistance or services, the phrases commonly used are modal verbs such as can, could, and would. To offer help or service to someone can use formal or informal sentences.

 

2.        Offering Help Expressions:

a.       Offering help expression in the formal situation.

·         Would you like some help?

·         May I help you?

·         May I offer my assistance?

·         Could I help you?

·         What can I do for you?

·         What shall I do for you?

·         I’ll be glad to help?

b.      Offering help expression in unformal situations.

·         Can I help you?

·         Need any help?

·         Do you need a hand?

·         Can I give you a hand?

·         Do you need any help?

·         Can I do anything to help?

·         Do you need any help?

c.        Differences between offering help and asking help:

Asking for help is ask someone for help.

 Example:

·         Could you possibly help me?

·         I need some help, please.

·         Could you give me a hand?

·         Could you help me, please?

·         I need some assistance, please.

·         Would you help me?

 

3.        Accepting help/something

·         Yes, please

·         Ok

·         Certainly

·         Thanks

·         Thank you

·         How kind of you! Thank you very much.

·         That’s very good of you.

·         Yes, please do.

 

4.        Refusing Help/something

·         No, Thanks

·         No, thank you

·         No, you don’t need to.

·         That’s very kind, but I can manage myself.

·         That’s very kind of you, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

 

5.        Example Dialogue Offering Help and the Responses.

Dialogue 1

Mother : It’s really cold tonight

Dina : Should I bring you a blanket, Mom?

Mother : No, I’m fine. I’m already wearing my jacket

Dina : Okay, then. I’ll make you hot chocolate if you like

Mother : Thanks, Sweetie.

 

Dialogue 2

 Junaidi : I think I lost my earphone

 

Tiara : Really? Have you checked your bag?

Junaidi : Yes, I have

 Tiara : Maybe you dropped it somewhere. Do you want me to help you find it?

Junaidi : It’s okay, thank you.

 Tiara : Okay. What if I lend you mine? I still have one at home

 Junaidi : Really? Thank you, Tiara
